Luxor, the capital of ancient Egypt during the glorious period of the New Kingdom (1580-1085 B.C.), for the ancient Egyptians it was “Wast” which also means prosperity and for the Greeks and the Romans it was Thebes holds a great place for Egyptologists and history fans as it is really “the greatest open air museum in the world”. The huge amount of monuments in Luxor can be subdivided to religious buildings on the Eastern Bank of the Nile such as the complex of the Temples of Karnak and Luxor Temple. While the Western Bank is mainly dedicated to funerary buildings of which you will visit the most important, namely the Valley of the Kings with rock cut royal tombs dating back to the New Kingdom, the Colossi of Memnon (remains of the funerary temple of king Amenophis III (c. 1400 B.C.) and the terraced funerary temple of Queen Hatshepsut (c. 1450 B.C.)
