Description:
Kalabsha Temple on Lake Nasser
Aswan, the southern city of Egypt with a lot of sun was an ancient border town. Its atmosphere is quite African. The Nile in Aswan is magnificent flowing between granite rocks and desert. Aswan is famous for its ancient monuments, little islands and spices souks (markets).
The High Dam created the artificial Lake Nasser that could have lead many monuments to be lost under the water if those monuments hadn’t been relocated. One of those relocated monuments was the temple of Kalabsha. Its original location was about 55 km south of Aswan. It was dismantled ad reassembled in its present location just south of the High Dam. The rescue project was funded by the UNESCO and assisted by the German government in the 1960’s. The temple was built in the Roman period during the reign of Octavius Augustus (30-14 B.C.) over another temple dating back to the New Kingdom. The temple was a tribute to the Nubian Sun God Mandulis (Merul)
