Salah eldin(Saladin) built the Citadel(12th century) to protect Cairo against potential crusades but they never made it that far and the citadel became the residence of the ruler till the middle of the 19th century.Inside the great walls of the citadel you will visit the mosque of ibn Qalaoun(14th century) and the famous alabaster mosque(19th century). Then you will move to the beautiful Mosque of Sultan Hassan(14th century) and Al-Rifa'i Mosque(19th century) where members of the Royal family of Mohammed Aly including the last king of Egypt, king Farouk were buried. The last Shah of Iran, Reda Pahlavi was buried here too. Then you will move to the area of old Cairo where you will see the remains of the Roman fortress of Babylon(1st century), and visit the hanging church of Virgin Mary(3rd century) built over the fortress tower, the church of Abu Serga(St. Sergio)(5th century) with Holy Crypt where the Holy Family stayed for 6 months and the Synagogue of Ben Ezra(9th century).
The Coptic museum was inaugurated in 1910 and restored, re-inaugurated in 2006. It has 16000 works of art and manuscripts
